An expansion joint is a machine part which absorbs temperature expansion and contraction of building materials, to soak vibrations or to join parts together. They are normally found in buildings, piping systems, ships and other constructed objects. Expansion joints are made of different materials depending on requirements. They may be made of fabric which is suitable for gaseous products as these are resistant to the effects of acid or alkaline gases. Rubber expansion joints which are made of high quality rubber have damping properties and are used in process engineering and in manufacturing of motors. Steel expansion joints are made to absorb stresses in operation and are used in the chemical industry and gas and water supply operations. Stainless steel expansion joints may also be fabricated.
