For safety reasons, different types of vessels require different types of marine communication. For example, smaller recreational vessels might not require the installation of radio stations although may do so voluntarily. Larger commercial ships however might be required to communicate with the coast guard and coast stations and would therefore be required to be equipped with a radio station. Various radio equipment include VHF radiotelephone for short distance communications with coast stations and other ships; radar for navigating, collision avoidance, position locating and traffic control; EPIRB for when in distress (batteries must always be updated); single sideband radiotelephone for medium to long distance communication; satellite radio; radiotelegraph; survival craft radio for lifeboats and rafts; and on-board radio for internal communication.
