Wire ropes are cables made of multiple strands of wire twisted to form a rope. Due to its material, wire ropes are clearly superior in strength to hemp ropes or metal chains. There are different constructions of wire ropes with different properties to perform different functions. Stranded ropes are usually used in rope slings and running ropes. Spiral and full-locked ropes are used in stationary and stay ropes for carrying tensile forces. Full-locked ropes are also used as track ropes but do not bend with the curvature of rollers unlike running ropes. Since wire ropes are susceptible to wear and tear subjected by extreme environments, regular inspections should be made to allow for timely replacement and thus prevention of dangerous situations.
